The latest news from the world of democracy affairs in India is about the unsuccessful conclusion of the meeting between the government of India body and the members of the civil society representing the lokpal committee.
The was the last scheduled meeting between the two parties, the two parties have earlier met 8 time and discussed their views on the lokpal bill, the lokpal bill is supposed to be tabled in the parliament of India in the upcoming monsoon session, and the two sides were trying to have consensus on the draft version of the lokpal bill that should be tabled in the parliament before it can be enacted as law in India.
The representative of the civil society earlier had protested against the government’s inaction on the lokpal bill, as part of their protest the representative of the civil society had observed fast at the landmark Jantar Manter of Delhi, the government after seeing the kind of support generated by the civil society within the common people of the country had to take note of their demand and they agreed to discuss on the issues raised by the civil society representative.
Today’s meeting was last one in the series of meeting that have happened post the protest by the civil society representatives, there were some disagreement between the government and the civil society representative that had come out in the earlier meetings as well, the prime difference had been the inclusion of the office of the Prime minister, the Prime Minister itself, the higher judiciary of the country and the conduct of the members of the parliament inside the parliament, the government is in opposition to include these under the preview of the lokpal and believe that this will create a parallel government that will be answerable to no one in the country.
The online news report published has mentioned the comments of the representative of the government as saying that the draft prepared is robust, however the same report has also mentioned about the disappointment expressed by the civil society on the bill.
The online news in India have also published report about the announcement by the civil society committee leader to go on fast and protest about the government’s draft bill.
